Q: What is it? A: A fancy-looking, fancy hotel with a fancy name and a fancy swimming pool in the basement. And a great, although quite fancy location in the Big Smoke.
Probably a hotelier’s wet dream:
Take a fancy looking Edwardian building, once the home of a newspaper, smack in the middle of London, just near Covent Garden and Leicester Square. Let it have a complete overhaul and give it a modern design, but without the obvious design tweaks. Staff it with employees who are experienced. Charge your guests plenty. That pretty much sums the One Aldwych concept up.
Spacious lobby – small rooms.
The lobby is a roomy place with a bar that seems to be always busy. Corridors and rooms are on the other hand quite small, but everything is interlaced in a fashion that works. The overall feeling is that you are actually getting what you pay for, (which is plenty). The conversation starter when you arrive home is how you took the elevator down to the basement at 8.00 AM on a Saturday morning. The 18 meter swimming pool is certainly a gift from above. Next to the pool there is a steam sauna and a gym. Thank you, One Aldwych.
This is by no means a spectacular Sanderson or a minimalistic Hempel. But there’s something very competent and professional about the whole place. It’s luxurious but hardly exciting. It’s just a very, very good hotel and sometimes that will do nicely.
