Now it can be announced publicly:
I’m not a spa guy. Then why book yourself in at the he Lodge and Spa at Cordillera? Well, if you’ve decided to go skiing in Vail and waited too long with booking the accommodation. They claim that they are “one of the most luxurious retreats in the world”. Hardly. In my opinion this place feels 20 years too old – mostly because it’s 20 years old.
Challenging my opinion, is the fact that they’ve been on the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List 2006, 2007 and 2008.
Am I coming across as not satisfied?
Any place working their brand the way the Cordillera do, should deliver a little more premium and a little more exclusivity. On the other hand, if Chicago’s ‘If You Leave Me Now’ played ballroom style on the enormous grand piano in the lobby makes you tick, then you’ve certainly found your place.
So what do they deliver?
56 rooms, the more luxurious with quite a view over the jagged peaks that form the Sawatch range. A selection of outdoor hot tubs. Very attentive staff at breakfast. And most of all, a very secluded location on a ridge with security manning the gate five miles down the valley.
Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I have something against places who start their description with the words “Distinguished by its Belgian chateau-style architecture and mountaintop setting…”?
The two stars grade comes with mixed feelings.
On one hand one of the staff members offered to drive ahead me and show the way, as I arrived in Edwards way after sunset. My ski helmet is off for that kind of service. On the other hand, this is a place for a different category of travellers than I represent.
This was very evident when me and my brother stopped at the security gate in our rented Subaru. The woman made a visual scan of us, two skiers with three day beards and too much equipment, then she skeptically asked: – What are you guys doing up there?
I hereby announce my sincere apologies for looking like a skier and not like Tony Bennett. It’s hard for any establishment, no matter how luxurious, to compensate for a such a first impression.
