Andaz London, London, England ***

Q: What is it? A: An old hotel on top of a railway station that has understood that if you want to attract guests to this location, you’d better offer them a little more for a little less.

The outside is 1864. The inside is 2000. And the experience is… quite nice!

Like if the Guggenheim in NYC was shrink-wrapped into a Victorian building? Yes, sort of.

Rooms at the Andaz are full of smart stuff, like the minibar/wardrobe/storage compartment behind those grey doors.

Rooms at the Andaz are full of smart stuff, like the minibar/wardrobe/storage compartment behind those grey doors. But you can almost smell the presence of the Hyatt chain.

Long before I arrived, I decided to like this hotel.
I saw the reviews and I liked what I saw. I saw some pictures of it and I liked what I saw. I arrived to find a lobby with no desk but manned with helpful and friendly young people who offered me a glass of white wine while I filled out the usual forms (and the wine was even OK!) and I liked it as well.

Located where you’d normally not go, so expect a lot of free goodies!
Complimentary WiFi. Complimentary local calls. Complimentary mineral water and juice. Complimentary room service breakfast. And on top of that complimentary laundry service (I’ve heard of regulars who arrive with dirty clothes and check out with nothing but clean garments!). Q: Is there a catch? A: It’s on top of Liverpool Station, which happens to be the perfect place if you’re flying in to London Stansted, plus it’s no more than six stops from Oxford Circus. But again, this is not the centre hub of London. Hence (I guess) all these nice complimentary things.

It needs something: Atmosphere!
The press release says that “Andaz was the result of extensive research”. Yes, probably. Since November 2007 the former Great Eastern Hotel is the first to operate under the Andaz brand, which in turn is part of the Hyatt Corporation.
Despite the great staff, you can almost feel the memos trickle down from the boardrooms to the reception… sorry, the Living Room. Plus, the Andaz London needs something else: Confidence! The Eames’ office chairs at the ‘ergonomic workstation’ are mentioned whenever possible. The staff are called ‘ANdAZ Team Members’ (sic!). They are described as your personal host ”recognising and responding to guests’ personal tastes, requests and preferences”. This would all be good if it wasn’t so PowerPointish.
So… dear friends at Hyatt, when you say that Unexpected detail exists around the building, please… let a few things be just that; unexpected. Try it! You will probably like it. And so will your guests.
